Syllabus
Prerequisites: Bachelor's degree in Literature, History or Philosophy.
Target skills and knowledge: It is the aim of the course to offer the preliminary linguistic and historical knowledge and the necessary methodological tools for the critical study of ancient Christian literature.
Examination methods: Final oral exam.
Assessment criteria: Grading will take into consideration the knowledge of the subject, the clarity of the exposition, the cleverness at arguing.
Course unit contents: One or two gods? Tertullian's polemics against Marcion.
The main theme of the course is the exposition of the biblical and theological thought of Marcion. Among the numerous heresiological reactions, attention will in particular focus on the fourth book of Tertullian's treatise "Against Marcion", specifically devoted to the analysis of the mysterious gospel used by the heretic.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Seminar teaching based on the reading of Tertullian, Against Marcion, book IV.
