Prerequisites: Basic knowledge concerning the transformation, role and social implications of communication technologies; understanding of mechanisms that lead to policies and governing arrangements, including political participation; curiosity for the global dimension of communication phenomena; interest in research work, including group work, and critical discussions. Good knowledge of the English language; basic knowledge of a second foreign language.
Target skills and knowledge: Expected results: acquisition of elements to support critical analysis of contemporary communication realities, with a global outlook, and a special focus on the themes, problems and challenges posed by the developments of information and communication technologies.
Expected cognitive results: better understanding of the nexus between domestic, regional and transnational communication processes; awareness of current debates conceding global communication and its governance; acquisition of theoretical-analytical frameworks and tecniques for investigating different supra- and trans-national realities (organizations, initiatives) representatives of developments that characterize knowledge societies.
Examination methods: Participation in class, also through collaborative work, alongside short written assignments, group work to produce a themed paper and oral class presentation of the same, are integral part of the course and will be considered in the final evaluation. Furthermore, active participation in possible ‘special workshops’ (depending on available resources) and completion of related assignements are core components of the final exam.
Assessment criteria: Evaluation will include the overall participation of students in class discussions and activities (20%); commitment to reading assigned materials and produce short assignments (30%); commitment, autonomy and creativity in conducting themed group research work, including elaboration of collective paper and class presentation, making use of the knowledge and competence acquired during the course (50%).
Course unit contents: The course provides an overview of global communications as a multidimensional field of study, as well as conceptual and methodological tools to conduct research and operate in the context of global communications. It offers opportunities to master historical developments that are relevant to understand the contemporary realities of global communications, and operate as media professionals therein: international debates and current initiatives around communication problems promoted by international agencies (such as the United Nations, Unesco, ITU, Un Women, European Union); the transnational structures, means and channels of global news; the content, frames and languages of global media policy, with a particular focus on Internet Governance, the actors involved, their role and interests.
The course adopts a gender mainstreaming perspective: all themes and topics are dealt with in due consideration of their relevance and implication for gender equality. Moreover, thematic seminars may be activated, dealing deal with current affairs in contemporary global media, in relation to on-going international research project, as well as in response to students’ interests. Such themed workshops are announced at the beginning of the course.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course adopts an innovative and interactive methodology, which combines lectures with workshops, also with the contribution of external international experts, research activity and discussions, on the basis of reading assignments, videos and other materials presented in class or resulting from individual research.
Additional notes about suggested reading: A section in the Moodle platform is activated to integrate and support class activities; materials, readings, reference to web-based resources like archives and repositories, instructions for group work are all clearly organized and made available through the platform.
Study materials are mainly made available in English, while research activities may be conducted in different languages, reflecting students’ linguistic competence and cultural backgrounds.
Instructions about reading assignments and related activities and tasks are provided by the teacher in due time during the course.
