Target skills and knowledge:

The course aims at developing in the student the ability to critically analyze the most important poems written by that selected group of Spanish poets who, between the Twenties and the Thirties, received the iconoclastic impact of the European vanguards and, by mixing it with the local poetic heritage, created an original, very specific, hybrid of tradition and modernity. We will study the entire oeuvre of the so-called "generacion del '27", from J. Guille to V. Aleixabdre, from Alberti to Salinas, and then we will focus on Garcia Lorca and his specific "surrealistic" vein that we will consider in a broader context given by the intermedial interaction with Spanish surrealist painting and cinema (Salvador Dalì, Luis Bunuel etc...)
At the end, we will evaluate the ability of the student to read critically the Spanish texts of the vanguard and to move fluently in the web of images of Lorca's poems. |

1) Theory and Practice of the Spanish vanguard.
In the first part of the course we will study the manifestos of the Spanish vanguard (creationism, pure poetry, ultraism, deshumanized art...) activating a dialogue with the European context. We will go on reading selected poems from the most important collections published between the Twenties and the Thirties by the "poetas del '27", trying to define the originality of their way with the vanguard. We will specially focus on the phenomenon of the spanish reception and acclimatization of surrealism perpetrated by the so-called andalusian poets.

2) The martyrologic iconography in Lorca's poems.
The second part of the course will be dedicated entirely to the reading of Garcia Lorca's poetic and dramatic oeuvre, tryng to isolate that "impossible balance" that, from the late "modernism" of Libro de poemas through the deep "folklore" of Romacero gitano up to the anguished surrealism of Poeta en Nueva York, define the sense of his poetic and human enquiry, tragically suspended between the fascination of the fugitive image and the need to testify the permenence of the meaning. The representation of the Christian martyrdom, like a recurring obsession, will be analyzed as a privileged studio for the expression of this underlying tension.
