Prerequisites: Basic science and chemistry knowledge.
Target skills and knowledge: Patents:
The purpose of the first part of the course is to provide a basic knowledge on industrial property rights, particularly in chemistry and related fields. Basic knowledge on three fundamental aspects will be provided:
i) the concept of invention and the patentable and not patentable inventions;
ii) how to draw up an invention to be patentable in chemistry and related field; and
iii) the procedures to secure patent rights in Italy and abroad.
The aim is to enable course participants to:
i) understand the issues related to the key features differentiating an invention with respect the normal technical progress of the field of the invention;
ii) read a patent document and understand the meaning of the technical language used for the purposes to secure the legal protection of the invention.

Product development:
Providing students with the basic understanding of the way (chemical) companies operate.
The product development process is exploited to illustrate key steps, involved functions, critical interfaces and required skills.
Examination methods: Written examination.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will be based on a multiple choice written test so to assess the understanding and proper acquisition of theoretical concepts for the purposes of an autonomous application thereof.
Course unit contents: Patents:
⁃ The historical evolution of the patent laws and the international patent conventions in force, framing of reference for the current national and regional patent laws;
⁃ The concept of invention in the current patent laws in particular with reference to the European law and rules;
⁃ The differences between the legal requirements and the legal protection of a patent and of an industrial secret;
⁃ The requirements to be met by an invention;
⁃ The requirements to be met by a patent application;
⁃ The functions of a patent;
⁃ The rights of the inventor and of the applicant;
⁃ The framework for drafting a patent application and the peculiarities of patents in chemistry and related fields: definition of the invention by the general formula and / or functional parameters; the types of claims and their scope;
⁃ The legal procedures for filing a patent application and of the merit examination thereof, with particular reference to the examination according to the Italian patent law (Industrial Property Code CPI) and European Patent Convention (EPC);
⁃ Patenting strategies and the International and European Conventions: the Union Convention of Paris; the Agreement on Trade-related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs); The Patent Convention Cooperation Treaty (PCT), the European Patent Convention (EPC) and the Unitary Patent.
