Syllabus
Prerequisites: Numerical Analysis
Target skills and knowledge: Introduce the Mathematical Engineering students to the fundamental topics for the numerical solution of 2nd order PDEs ("boundary value problems" and "initial boundary value problems") with the aid of Finite Difference and Finite Element methods.
Examination methods: Computer implementation of a numerical project. Oral examination.
Assessment criteria: Critical knowledge of the course topics. Ability to present the studied material. Discussion of the student project.
Course unit contents: Course introduction. Solution of sparse large-size linear systems: projective methods. Solution of ordinary differential equations: finite difference methods, stability and convergence. Solution of 2nd order partial differential equations (PDE): classification, variational methods, finite elements, transient problems. Numerical solution of the diffusion, heat diffusion, and advective transport PDEs. Numerical project.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures. Students are required to work on computer implementation of the techniques introduced in the course lectures.
