Syllabus
Prerequisites: Geotechnics
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of this course is to guide the student in designing geotechnical structures for soil protection against natural hazards and for the realization of territorial infrastructures. This objective is achieved through the acquisition of knowledge in the theory and practice of the geotechnics.
Examination methods: Some short preliminary homeworks (written) during the course (6-7), one executive geotechnical project on a specific earthwork (levee, retaining wall,...) and the final oral examination.
The final oral exam (about 20-30 min) will start from the results of the previous homeworks and of the executive project.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation criterion is based on homeworks, on the compliance of the project with the objectives of the course and on the final oral exam.
Course unit contents: The following topics will be discussed:
Summary of geotechnical notes
Static and dynamic soil compaction
In-situ tests for soil characterization
Embankment and levee construction and soil consolidation
Vertical drains
Vacuum assisted consolidation
Construction stage stability
Monitoring and prediction of settlements
Forms and function of levees
Levee stability and seepage
Failures of levees, remediations and restorations
Retaining walls in static and dynamic conditions
The basics of rock mechanics
Stabilty of rock slopes
Rockfall protective systems
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The learning will be favored by a mix of teaching methods with the aid of slide shows, videos, with exposure to the blackboard and with the support of the personal computer. Group works will be encouraged for the homeworks.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Besides lecture notes and handouts, an extensive review of texts for consultation will be provided.
