Target skills and knowledge: The course aims at giving the fundamental knowledges for comparing and selecting materials with regard to the multiple functionalities of a component, to the shape and to the constraint of the manufacturing process
Examination methods: Traditional
Assessment criteria: Written test and report on a personally developed case study of materials selection
Course unit contents: Types of materials data: numerical and non-numerical data. Organisation of materials data: structured and non-structured data. Materials charts for single properties. Materials charts for combinations of properties. Determination of indexes for materials properties. Selection as a function of the manufacturing processes. Selection with multiple constraints and conflicting objectives. Selection as a function of the shape. Desing of components with complex combinations of properties. The materials-environment correlation. Selection of materials and industrial design. Case studies.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Introduction to the design process. Engineering materials and their basic properties.
Materials property charts: development and use. Materials indices: performance of a component as a function of a combination of materials properties; selection of materials by means of material charts and indices. Case studies of materials selection.
Selection in conditions of multiple constraints and objectives; penalty and performance functions; graphical and numerical approach; evaluation of weight factors; case studies.
Materials and shape: fundamentals; shape factors; materials indices comprising shape factors; graphical approaches to the selection of materials and shapes. Case studies of combined selection of materials and shape.
Design of composite materials, including cellular materials; optimization of structures; graphical approach to interpretation and prevision of properties. Case studies of composite materials.
Fundamentals of materials selection as a function of environment, industrial design and overall processing.
