Syllabus
Course unit contents: GENERAL PATHOLOGY

• Cellular and Molecular Pathology

Causes of cellular damage. Physical agents: ionizing and UV radiations. Chemical agents: poisons, drugs, biotransformation. ROS and oxidative stress. Reversible and irreversible damage. Cell death: necrosis, apoptosis, necroptosis.

Cell adaptation: regeneration, hyperplasia, hypertrophy, atrophy, metaplasia. Autophagy. Pathology caused by intra- and extracellular constituents. Biological damage: bacterial toxins. Genetic pathology: examples of monogenic diseases.

• Tissue reponse to lesions

The inflammatory reaction. Acute inflammation: vascular and cellular events. Chemical mediators. Inflammasome and autoinflammatory diseases. General effects of inflammation. Chronic inflammation. The healing process. Regeneration, repair and healing. Fibrosis. Sclerosis. New therapeutic strategies in the treatment of inflammation.

• Oncology

Tumors as multifactorial and multiphasic diseases. Tumor etiology: external agents (chemical, physical, biological); endogenous agents (genetic, epigenetic, hormonal). Molecular pathogenesis of tumors: proto-oncogenes and their mechanisms of activation and action; oncosuppressor genes (function and mechanisms of inactivation). The neoplastic cell: alterations of the replication program and of programmed cell death. Invasion and metastasis. Clinical applications: molecular diagnostics and molecular bases of therapy.

• Pathophysiology of the cardiovascular system. Hypoxia, ischemia and infarction
• Heart failure
• Acute cardiogenic and non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema
• Pathophysiology of the lung. Respiratory failure
• Shock
• Pathophysiology of the blood. Anemias and polycytemias
• Pathophysology of hemostasis
• Pathophysiology of the kidney. Acute and chronic renal failure
• Pathophysiology of fluid and electrolyte balance. Edemas
• Pathophysiology of acid-base balance
• Pathophysiology of calcium and phosphate balance
• Pathophysiology of the liver. Liver failure and portal hypertension
• Pathophysiology of the endocrine system and of metabolism
• Pathophysiology of skeletal muscle
• Immunopathology 
• Pathophysiology of infectious diseases
• Translational medicine. From pathogenesis to disease therapy (this topic will cover translational aspects of selected topics from the general program)
