Syllabus
Prerequisites: general chemistry and inorganic chemistry
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide knowledge on the fundamental concepts of organic chemistry, thus related to the C-X bond (with X = C, O, N, halogen), the nomenclature, structure, property and reactivity of the principle functional groups.
Examination methods: written exam
15 open questions (exercises)
available time: 1.30 hours
2 exams per exam period (total 6 per year)
Assessment criteria: be able to give a IUPAC name to an organic molecule and vice versa.
Be able to classify an organic molecule based on the functional groups present
be able to anticipate the physical-chemical properties based on the molecular structure
be able to anticipate the chemical reactions that can occur between molecules

The structure of organic molecules (Chapter 1).
Structural elements of organic molecules, formulas, nomenclature and functional groups

The chemical bond in organic chemistry (Chapter 2).
Lewis structures, bond properties, resonance structures, bond formation, hybridized orbitals, molecular structure, π-delocalized systems, noncovalent interactions

The conformation of organic molecules (Chapter 3).
Acyclic and cyclic molecules

The stereochemistry of organic molecules (Chapter 4):
Concepts of isomers, topicity, chirality, polarimetry, stereoisomers, stereoselective and stereospecific reactions (introduction), nomenclature

Chemical reactions and mechanisms (Chapter 5):
General aspects, acid-base reactions, reaction mechanisms, reactions in biological systems

Substitution reactions on alkyl halides and alcohols (Chapter 6+7)
Fundamental aspects, SN1 and SN2 reactions on alkyl halides, substitution reactions on alcohols, eteres and epoxydes, thiols and thioethers.

Elimination reactions (Chapter 8)
E1 vs E2, substitutionvs elimination, elimination reactions in nature.

Addition reactions to alkenes (Chapter 9)
Electrophilic additions to alkenes and alkynes, stereo and regiochemistry, hydroboration reactions.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: 48 hours of class room teaching
Time will be dedicated to problem/exercise solving
During the course students may use simple chemical models to study molecular structure and conformation. Computer animations will be shown.
