Syllabus
Prerequisites: basic knowledge of chimistry, organic chemistry, biology and biochemistry
Target skills and knowledge: differences between drugs and active compounds
drug design workflow
correlations between chemical properties and physiological activity
technical approaches to design and study a drug
pros and cons of seleclected class of drugs
Examination methods: For students attending the class: one wrtitten test and a final oral examination
For all other students: one oral examination
Assessment criteria: For student evaluation it will be consider their ability in :
- discussing correlations between drug chemical features and therapeutic potential
- design or optimizing new drugs for selected targets
- explaining the mechanism of action of selected drugs
- explaining the occurrance of main limitations
Course unit contents: biologically active compounds and drugs. Drugs target. Drugs discovery, design and optimization. Mechanism of action of selected class of drugs.
anticancer drugs, antiviral drugs, antibiotics, drugs to treat inflammation
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lessons are design to discuss all the topics of the course. Students are asked to solve selected problems and to share them within the class.
