Syllabus
Prerequisites: You are expected to have already reached a B1 level in English according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Target skills and knowledge: The course is aimed at providing you with the main patterns of legal English which are needed to both understand and produce legal discourse, while also improving your skills towards reaching a B2 level.
By the end of the course, you will master legal terminology in English, you will have consolidated your ability to understand written/spoken legal texts, and you will have gained competence in writing academic law essays.
Examination methods: The final exam is a written test subdivided into three parts:
1) vocabulary
2) course contents
3) an academic law essay.
No dictionaries are permitted.
Assessment criteria: You will be assessed on your knowledge of the course contents and of legal terminology, as well as on your ability to apply this knowledge to write a well organised academic law essay using a range of lexico-grammatical patterns.
Course unit contents: Various areas of English law will be covered in class, e.g. sources and divisions of law (UK and US), criminal and civil procedure, European Union Law.
Reading texts and audio-visual materials will be used to encourage in-class discussions.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Teacher-fronted lessons and pair/group work. In class, and for homework, you will be involved in reading/listening comprehension and writing/speaking activities, and you will be expected to participate actively.
The course is held in English.
