Prerequisites: Duration: from October to mid June (ASSISTED LANGUAGE TEACHING + MODULE(S) ON THEORY).
The course French Language 2 for the degree courses in “Language and Cultural Mediation” and “Modern Languages and Cultures” (2nd year of the bachelor degree) can only be taken after passing the exam for French Language 1. The required level is A2 in all four basic skills of written and oral comprehension and production. The module also requires good competence in phonetic and phonological aspects of French.
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of the course is to take students to level B1, giving them sound knowledge of modern French from a theoretical and practical point of view. Topics covered include: a grammatical analysis of the sentence; written and oral language skills; an analysis of linguistic and cultural aspects of French for special purposes.
Students of the Language and Cultural Mediation degree course will also be introduced to translation theory and practice: they will be able to analyze translated texts syntactically, functionally and semantically, focusing on aspects of lexis and compensation strategies; they will also be presented with the typical problems translation for the printed media (reported speech: interviews and reports; comment: editorials).
Examination methods: Examination
1) Assisted language teaching: for the written test, students will be required to write a formal commercial letter in French.
2) Written test for the common module on theory: sentence analysis aimed at constituents, syntactic relations, semantic roles of syntactic units, structure of phrases, values of morphemes.
3) Assisted language teaching: for the oral test, students will be required to take part in a dialogue simulating a business negotiation.
4A) Final oral test (LCM; MZL - C language): i) discussion of a topic of the course (with discussion of errors in the written test); ii) analysis of an excerpt; iii) oral testing of lexicon (drills).
4B) Final oral test (MZL): i) discussion of one of the topics of the course; ii) sight translation of a short passage from among those discussed in class (preceded by an analysis of the text and supported with the cognitive control of the translation process); iii) sight translation of a new passage (with a discussion of aspects such as the type and function of the text and translation strategies).
Assessment criteria: Final oral test (LCM; MZL - C language): priority will be given to the accuracy of linguistic analysis and of the metalanguage used.

Final oral test (MZL): evaluation criteria for the translation exercise include: accuracy; creativity (culture-bound terms, register, word puns); functional adequacy; handling of translation difficulties.
Course unit contents: 1) Common module on SYNTAX "Microsyntaxe: observer et réfléchir" (9 CFU, LCM + MZL) : the module will describe simple and complex units of the sentence, alternating theoretical observation and practice. Topics covered include: noun phrases and verb phrases. In particular, students will be required to practice on linguistic analysis.
A major focus is on the lexicon of the existential domain (perceptions, emotions, and thoughts), which will be analysed step by step using systematic inventories.

2) TRANSLATION module "Traduire: modèles et genres" (3 CFU, MZL, except for C language): the module will provide a historical overview of translation with the aim of contextualising the theories of translating. The focus will be on equivalence (direct and indirect) and the particular requirements of translating different genres (informative vs aesthetic texts). Students will be asked to practice on the translation of journalistic texts (from French into Italian and vice versa).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Modules: exercises of linguistic analysis; lexical drills.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Materials will be uploaded in digital format on the online learning platform "Moodle".
