Target skills and knowledge:

During the course the students will continue working on developing their receptive and productive skills towards attaining the CEFR C1 During the course the students will continue working on developing their receptive and productive skills towards attaining the CEFR C1 level by the end of the third year of the degree course. The course also aims to provide the students with a basic theoretical background in English linguistics, so as to enable them to analyse written and oral texts. |
Examination methods:

PART 1 (FRONTAL LECTURES): End-of-module exam on the contents of the lecturers’ modules.
PART 2 (WRITING, TRANSLATION, ORAL SKILLS): End-of-module exams in translation, written and spoken production. |
Assessment criteria:

The competences taught by Erik Castello will be evaluated with a PART 1: A final computer-based test will assess the students’ knowledge of the contents of the modules. Students will be also expected to conduct language analyses, and to write and translate short sentences.
PART 2: The oral skills exam will be in the form of a peer-to-peer interaction, the translation exam will involve the translation of a short text from Italian into English, while for the written production exam students will be asked to describe a graph. More information about assessment procedures will be given at the beginning of the course. |
Course unit contents:

PART 1 (1st semester):
The course modules delivered by the lecturers aim to provide the students with the basic competences needed to analyse written texts and oral interactions in English and to translate and interpret them.
PART 2 (1st and 2nd semester):
The PART 2 course modules aim to help the students improve the following skills: written production, translation into English, spoken production.
For both PART 1 and PART 2, the online learning platform Moodle will be used to deliver course materials and support learning activities.

PART 1: Description of the English clause and verb phrase. Analysis of texts belonging to various genres and registers.
PART 2: Report writing and graph descriptions; translation of texts belonging to various genres and registers; spoken production in English. |
