Syllabus
Prerequisites: It is useful to have a general knowledge about human development, typical and atypical, in its various aspects
Target skills and knowledge: The course is aimed at learning the general principles for child evaluation in several areas of development, through the knowledge of the tools available for the Italian population, placing them within the theoretical background and debate, discussing the ways of use, the strengths and weaknesses, to promote the acquisition of integrated and critical assessment skills
Examination methods: Written exam with open questions
Assessment criteria: The main evaluation criterion is the exhaustivity: the questions are open and do not have space limitations, to give way to the student to demonstrate the completeness of his preparation on the topics studied. For every topic, completeness of information will be considered with respect to theoretical bases and possible applications in the field of health psychology
Course unit contents: Introduction to the evaluation of the child: the distinction between direct and indirect methods; age-related issues in child assessment; the evaluation protocol; link between research and assessment.
The assessment of cognitive skills: prenatal evaluation; neonatal evaluation; sensorimotor scales; evaluation of direct and indirect speech; evaluation of symbolic play; intelligence.
The evaluation of socio-emotional development: attachment bond; temperament; social skills; emotional competence.
The evaluation of the development context: parenting; ecoculture; parents of different cultures
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The topics will be covered through lectures and discussion of the material presented, with research and clinical examples, videos and practical exercises.
Students' participation is hoped and encouraged.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The two volumes in the exam bibliography are outdated and obsolete in some ways, in the sense that some of the important instruments presented have actually been fortunately updated and revised (eg WISC, WIPPSI, Vineland, Leiter). Students who attend the course will be given the latest information. I invite those who make the examination not attending the lessons, to learn about new versions available of the test in question, by consulting the catalogs of the editors in Italy dealing with testisting (eg Giunti OS, Erickson and Hogrefe).
