Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic skills related to the psychology of relationships
Basic English for watching documentaries and reading scientific texts.
Target skills and knowledge: General psychology - fundamental knowledge of:
- biological and chemical correlates of behavior, especially concerning the central nervous system, the autonomic nervous system, and the endocrine system, as related to sensation, drive, emotion, learning, and memory.
- major theories of learning with relevance to instrumental and Pavlovian conditioning, motivation, and affect; relevant research on traditional and contemporary issues in learning; human learning and behavior modification;
- modern cognitive psychology about problem solving and reasoning, memory, language, imagery, and pathology of language and thought;
Social Psychology
- Attitudes and social cognition: functions, structure and models, change;
- Social relationships and development of the Self: primary and secondary dimensions, formation of self-esteem, peer relationships;
- Communication: linear, circular, dialogic models;
- Social influence: information legislation, conformity and conversion nomic minorities, crimes of obedience
- Deviant behavior vs. pro-sociality;
- The group processes and group relations: primary and secondary groups, intra-group and intergroup relations, bias, social identity
- Social Psychology cultural history of social thought and cultural historical perspective

Assessment criteria: The exam consists of two steps:
The written exam with open questions concerns the texts to be studied.
The practical part regards the group work and the project on gender studies
Course unit contents: After an introduction to the funtamental topics of General psychology and of history of psychology, this course is designed to introduce students to the complex interrelationship among individual psychological life, society and culture, as well as an of understanding human identity and behavior in its sociocultural context. Takes the perspective that psychosocial processes offers and has a particular focus on how identities are constructed, especially identities of groups and individuals. Class discussions focus around social problems and inter-group relations will be planned.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course will provide students with a broad perspective on the discipline of psychology through study of relevant work in philosophy, examination of the history of the field, and consideration of some of the major systems for explaining human behavior. Consideration of philosophy will include issues directly related to work in psychology (e.g., mind-body relations), and discussion of implicit philosophical commitments reflected by efforts in the field. While a good number of broad philosophical and historical issues will be examined, two main themes will be addressed throughout the course: (1) issues about the place of meaning and interpretation in psychology, and (2) the role played by culture (given that investigators and the people they study are members of a culture).
The aim of the course is to supply the student with theoretical and methodological instruments for the psychosocial analysis by studying the main psychosocial processes which regulate the interaction between individuals and their social environment.
The goal of this course is to provide students with a critical examination of violence and its origins from a bio-psycho-social perspective, as well as current clinical, theoretical and research approaches to studying aggressive and violent behaviour. Different types of violence will be examined, such as sexual violence, intimate partner violence and violence related to mental illness and personality disorders. This course will also review the most updated research on risk and protective factors for social violence. Lucifer effect will also be reviewed to understand how society's view of violence and aggression affects public policy.

Basic Historical content and research: “Field theory” between general psychology and social psychology - Gestalt Theory and Kurt Lewin; Leon Festinger and cognitive dissonance; Muzafer Sherif and autokinetic effect) ; World War II: Nazism and the problems of persuasion and propaganda; conformity and discrimination; the crime of abedience (Stanley Milgram and Philip Zimbardo)
Basic epistemological issues: Willem Doise schema: intrapersonal, interpersonal, intra inter-groups, social dimensions and construction of attitudes, stereotypes and discrimination; attitude formation, structure of attitudes, attitude change, the function of attitudes, relationship between attitudes and behavior; influence of situation; Social cognition: social and personal perception; causal attribution and fundamental error; heuristic and short cuts. Social influence: social influence on attitude and behavior; group dynamics and conformity.
Self: Self schema, experiences and memory, affective and emotional factors; personal and social identity; concept of personality and Self concept; Self-esteem; Self efficacy; Self Perception
Motivation.
Group Dynamics: social identity and membership; favorable perceptions and behaviors directed towards the in-group; negative perceptions and behaviors directed towards the out-group; polarization; Group think; de-individuation.
Research Method: empirical method and causality; descriptive correlational method; qualitative research.
