Prerequisites: Course held during the International Summer Program in Padova: intensive classes especially dedicated to international students. Classes and exam: May - mid June.

The course Economics of Social Capital will go through both theoretical models and econometric tools. Therefore, attending students are expected to be familiar with basic mathematical analysis, basic statistics and econometrics.
Target skills and knowledge: At the end of the course, students are expected:
• To have knowledge of key concepts, and theories of the social capital literature.
• To be aware of the problems related to social capital’s measurement in the empirical literature.
• To understand the relationships between social capital and economic development.
• To have knowledge of quantitative and econometric techniques used in economic research, in order to understand the main contents of recently published scientific papers.
Examination methods: written exam
Assessment criteria: Assessment for granting grades in this course is different for “attending” and “non-attending students”. For “attending students”, the exam is composed of two parts. The first part is a written final exam including open questions and exercises. The second part consists of 2 parts: the first is an oral presentation to the class of an academic paper to be agreed with the teacher; the second part is a presentation of assigned exercises.
For “non-attending” students, the exam consists of a written exam including open questions and exercises.
Grades for “attending” students:
- Written exam 55%
- Active class participation 10%
- Oral Presentation 35%

Grades for “non-attending” students:
- Written exam 100%
Course unit contents: This course will offer a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical concept and empirical applications of social capital in economics. We will look at how social capital is defined, and we will discuss measurement issues. Then we will analyze the effects of social capital on social and economic development.
The following topics will be covered during the course:
• Definitions of social capital. What is social capital. Social capital and other types of capital.
• Measurement issues
• Topics on Social Capital and Development
o Social capital and institutions,
o Social capital and economic growth,
o Social capital and health
• Topics on Social Capital as Patterns of Connections
o Immigrant Networks and Social Capital
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course combines lessons, students’ presentations, and in-class discussion of academic papers. Students are expected to participate actively by having read the material in advance.
Teaching materials
After each lecture, the slides presented in class will be available through the Moodle platform.
At the beginning of the course, a reading list will be provided with the indication of the academic papers to be analyzed and that students are supposed to read in advance.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Lectures will be based on academic articles. A syllabus will be provided at the beginning of the course.
