Prerequisites:
|
The previous knowledge and skills necessary for a proficient course understanding are related with the animal quantitative genetics and breeding and with the animal nutrition and feeding. However, no specific pass of these exams are required. |
Target skills and knowledge:
|
At the end of the course and after completing the exam students will have acquired a deep understanding on different use and exploitation of horses in human activities, i.e., both for sport and pleasure, and as farm animal. Students will known different equine breeds and their attitudes, genetic improvement methods and breeding in different type of horses, specific aspects of horse reproduction, nutrition, feeding and rearing systems. |
Examination methods:
|
The examination of students will be carried out through written test accounting for multiple choice questions, exercises and questions to be answered with a brief text production. Only a whole final examination will be allowed to students. |
Assessment criteria:
|
Students’ knowledge will be evaluated considering both specific definitions given during the course but also by analyzing their capacity of applying the acquired knowledge to simple problems related to genetic improvement, animal breeding or animal feeding. |
Course unit contents:
|
Introduction to horse world and activities. Horse production and horse industry.
Main foreign equine breeds and their use. Italian equine breeds and diffusion. Stud books organization for Italian horse breeds.
Genetic improvement of different horse breeds and selection goals depending on the use of animals.
Stables for horses and stud management.
Reproduction management in horse. Heat detection, artificial insemination and embryo transfer. Foaling in the mare and care to foals. Fertility parameters and fertility problems in mares.
Peculiar aspect of digestive physiology in horses. Feeding behavior and feeding diseases.
Nutritional evaluation of feedstuffs for horses and main feeding system used in horse industry. Nutritional requirements for horses and formulation of balanced diets. Feeding disorders. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods:
|
Direct room teaching activity and exercises on genetic improvement of horses, nutritional values of feeds and feeding, and composition of rations for horses. External activities will consider visits to horse shows and/or to studs with different type of horses. Possible voluntary practical activities with horses at the didactic stud of the University. This with the aim of transferring a greater as possible amount of practice skills to students and giving them the chance to become a technician able to carry out genetic, breeding, and feeding strategies in horse management. |
Additional notes about suggested reading:
|
The presence of students during direct teaching activities and exercises are strictly recommended in order to acquire the material presented during lectures and practical activities. The lecturer will allow the students to access on line the material as PDF files through the Moodle platform at th following web address: https://elearning.unipd.it/scuolaamv/. The teacher is available to receive students at his own office at any moment of the week by appointment. |
