Syllabus
Prerequisites: The basic knowledge concerning the Agronomy and General biology allow to follow the course with greater benefit.
Target skills and knowledge: At the end of the course the student should have acquired the basic knowledge and practical abilityies needed to design, establish and manage the herbaceous plant communities that are most commonly used in anthropic environments: turfgrasses, grass restorations and green roofs. The student should also be able to make choices and define strategies in a perspective of environmental sustainability.
Examination methods: The exam consists of a single oral test at the end of the course.
Assessment criteria: The student will be evaluated primarily on the knowledge concerning the environmental adaptability of herbaceous species and the effects produced on them by biotic and abiotic stresses. The student must also demonstrate ability to transfer theoretical knowledge on a practical level and make links between topics covered in the course.
Course unit contents: The course provides the basic knowledge for the development and turf management, with particular reference to ornamental and recreational types, as well as revegetation techniques in the context of agro-ecosystems (orchards, vineyards etc.) and in heavily altered sites (quarries, landfills etc.). The course also introduces the basic knowledge for the construction of green roofs for both extensive and intensive type.

In the specific the course covers the following topics:

-morphological characteristics and environmental adaptability of turf species;
-turfgrass establishment;
-turfgrass management and disease control;
-sod production and installation;
-grass restorations: classification, techniques of establishment and management;
-grass restoration of altered sites (quarries, dumps);
-grass restoration in agroecosystems (orchards, vineyards, buffer strips);
-wildflowers lawns, types and management.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: In addition to classroom lectures, the course includes practical lessons in the field that will be held primarily at the Experimental Agricultural Farm of the University and other educational visits to companies operating in turfgrasses, grass restorations and green roofs (seed companies, sodding farms, companies involved in substrates and plant material production for green roofs etc.).
