Syllabus
Prerequisites: Interest in the English-speaking world and in contemporary cultures; fluent English; good knowledge of the English literary canon.
Target skills and knowledge: Students will be asked to study some of the most important essays offered by postcolonial thought and cultural studies criticism; to appropriate in an active way the tools of postcolonial theory and criticism; to learn how to apply theory to the reading of the primary texts analyzed during the course; to develop the ability to analyze the postcolonial literary production and produce cultural reflection; to study the cultural and historical contexts related to the primary texts in the syllabus.
Examination methods: Oral exam at the end of the course. The final assessment takes into account individual or group presentations and active participation in class (good class work contributes to the final mark).
Assessment criteria: The students will be tested according to the following:
- appropriation of the tools of postcolonial theory and criticism;
- ability to apply theory to the reading of the primary texts analyzed during the course;
- ability to analyze literary production and produce cultural reflection;
- knowledge of primary texts in the syllabus;
- knowledge of the cultural and historical contexts related to the primary texts.
Course unit contents: The course on "British literature in transit: migration and global change" offers an introduction to postcolonial critical theory and perspectives from which postcolonial Anglophone literatures and cultures may be profitably approached. It deals with the relationships between the imperial centre and its colonies, it investigates moments of appropriation and subversion of European culture in the post-1945 period, it discusses questions of race and power relationships, and analyses contemporary British artistic expressions, offered in particular by literature and cinema, and related to phenomena of hybridisation, diaspora, and global migratory flows.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures, seminars, active participation of students in class, oral presentations on agreed topics.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The syllabus focuses on poems, plays and novels by a variety of anglophone authors.
A selection of postcolonial theory essays, as well as critical materials concerning primary texts, will be posted on Moodle.
