Brief description of the degree course
Characteristics and objectives
This degree course provides advanced knowledge of curriculum subjects and a thorough understanding of specific forms and social, economic, regional and institutional dynamics that characterize the processes of local development in different contexts and at different levels of development, knowledge aimed at recognizing the emergence of favourable conditions for local development (positive approach) and promoting the development of such conditions (regulatory approach). In particular, the degree course explores the purpose of such applications, the different methodologies used for the formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programmes and projects for local development. This degree course includes activities dedicated to the acquisition of advanced knowledge in the political, economic, regional and social fields of study and their transformations - with special insights regarding the processes of local development - statistics for the measurement of local development, the design of development and group dynamics. This degree course is conducted entirely in English and includes continuous collaboration (Erasmus) with Universities belonging to the European Task Force "Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific Region” of the Coimbra Group, which is part of Padua, as well as European universities that have activated the SUTROFOR and SUFONAMA Erasmus Mundus courses (in this context they are considered as collaborations in the field of research and training with universities in developing countries). The educational objectives and different contents are divided into a two-year study programme: the first year of the course provides skills for the recognition of local development processes (positive approach) and the second year of the course provides skills for the promotion of those selfsame processes (regulatory approach). This degree course provides an on-site traineeship, abroad and in Italy, in conjunction with relevant authorities and NGOs, to perform the case study that will provide the starting point for the Second Cycle degree course final exam. There is also an Interuniversity duplication order mode in English and French (with the conference of a dual degree): Erasmus Mundus STEDE (www.em-stede.eu).

Occupational opportunities
This degree course prepares students for professions in local development and, more in general, for development cooperation in different social and regional contexts, with non-governmental organizations, governmental organizations at various levels, international organizations, professional and neighbourhood associations. Potential career opportunities lie in the broad field of development cooperation - especially decentralized - and the promotion of community development in terms of context analysis and feasibility studies, activities in the context of the project cycle, participation in elaborating and evaluating policies and programs of this sector.

Access modalities
Access to this degree course requires at least 6 University Educational Credits in economics. Everyone is required to have a working knowledge of English at least at the B1 level.
For the Interuniversity EMM Sustainable Territorial Development course: admission is related to the selection of Erasmus Mundus.
