Prerequisites: Basic of Stratigraphy and Paleontology
Target skills and knowledge: To give the students basic knowledge of microfossils and their geological applications. Obtaining insight and knowledge into concepts, methods, techniques and applications of micropaleontology and the role of this in a broader context of geological studies.
Examination methods: Practical examination plus oral examination
Assessment criteria: Learning of contents of the course and presentation skill
Course unit contents: History of micropaleontology and its position in the context of the geological sciences. Its developments and the importance of deep-sea drilling projects.
The first part of the course deals with “pure” micropaleontology. An overview of the various microfossil groups of botanical and zoological origin, that are widely used both in academic research and oil and gas industry, by presenting their morphology, taxonomy, mode of life, environments and stratigraphic distribution. In this context, preparation- and research techniques of main microfossil groups and their geological importance in terms of dating, correlation, facies interpretation, paleoenviromental and paleoclimaticreconstruction is introduced to the students.
The second part of the course consists of practical microscope exercitations on micropaleontological samples which contain the main microfossil groups presented in the general theoretical part (e.g., calcareous nannofossils, foraminifera, radiolarians, diatoms, ….).
