Syllabus
Prerequisites: The skills needed are inorganic and organic chemistry, physiology, biochemistry and pathology.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide the knowledge necessary to enable the future graduate to understand the effects of herbal drugs and to fit in the different areas of preparation, marketing, and use of medicinal plants.
Examination methods: Oral exam, the final evaluation is integrated with vegetal biology. The macroscopic recognition of some herbal drugs is required (Appendix 1,http://bibliotecascienzefarmaco.cab.unipd.it/cosa-cerchi/contenuti-cosa-cerchi/siti-di-interesse-disciplinare). The drugs which have to be recognized are exposed in the University Library of via Japelli 1B.
Assessment criteria: Oral examination.
Course unit contents: In order to ensure public health, the plant drugs have to be safe, efficacious and of suitable quality for use. The teaching aims to provide the knowledge necessary to understand the effects of plant drugs on the human organism, through the study of general characteristics of these products, the chemical constituents and how to use medicinal plants. A monographic part is developed in the course.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The teaching is based on lectures. It is also provided the vision of samples of herbal drugs. There will be opportunities for discussion in the classroom.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The use of lecture notes may be useful. The use of databases and websites of AIFA, EMA and FDA, etc. are strongly proposed.
