Syllabus
Prerequisites: Knowledge of basic Organic Chemistry
Target skills and knowledge: Analysis of spectral properties of organic molecules aimed to assign their correct structural formula
Examination methods: Three written test
Assessment criteria: Scores of the tests
Course unit contents: Part 1. Elemental composition, raw formula and information acquired from it, unsaturation number. Mass spectroscopy. IR spectroscopy and assessment of functional groups. UV-Vis spectroscopy.
Part 2. Nuclear magnetic resonance of organic molecules (1H and 13C). Structural analysis with the aid of NMR spectroscopy.
Part 3. Assignement of the correct structural formula to an unknown organic molecule through the analysis of its spectral properties (as studied in part 1 and 2)
