Prerequisites: Knowledge of general and inorganic chemistry bases; knowledge of the analytical chemistry bases and of the properties of the equilibrium reactions in aqueous solution.
Target skills and knowledge: The course is designed to enable the student to successfully approach the practice experimental chemistry. In particular, the main objectives of the course are to provide an adequate theoretical knowledge and an appropriate modus operandi in the application of simple analytical methods for the analysis of inorganic substances of pharmaceutical interest included in the Italian Official Pharmacopoeia and European Pharmacopoeia. To achieve this, the fundamental principles of the qualitative chemical analysis, particularly with regard to inorganic substances of pharmaceutical interest, are illustrated in the lectures and put into practice in subsequent laboratory exercises.
Examination methods: Written examination and evaluation of laboratory individual tests and reports.
To take the exam the students must have passed the test of "General and Inorganic Chemistry".
Assessment criteria: The assessment of learning for each student will be made ​​either by evaluation of some practical laboratory exercises (single place), either by a written examination. In particular, will be evaluated:
- Knowledge of safety in chemical laboratories.
- Knowledge of the main equipment and laboratory instrumentation.
- Ability to prepare a lab report.
- Knowledge of the theoretical foundations of equilibria in solution from the analytical point of view and application of the same principles to qualitative analytical chemistry.
- Skill in the basic operations of the laboratory.
- Ability to perform qualitative analysis of inorganic substances reported in the FUI.
- Interpretation and rational criticism of the results obtained in the experimental tests carried out in the laboratory.
Course unit contents: -General laboratory chemical safety practices, accident prevention and first aid items.
-Main techniques and basic operations in the practice of experimental chemistry.
-Identification tests for qualitative analysis of inorganic pharmaceuticals
-Analytical methods for the analysis of inorganic substances of pharmaceutical interest inserted in the Italian Official Pharmacopoeia and the European Pharmacopoeia.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: -Safety practices and safety data sheets in a chemical laboratory; accident prevention and PPE, equipment and safety and emergency signs;
-Theoretical aspects solubilization and precipitation (solubility and solubility product, factors that influence the solubility product, precipitation, relationship between solubility and solubility product, the common ion effect, selective precipitation); acid-base equilibria (definition of acid and base, the fundamental equations for the study of chemical equilibria, pH of solutions); redox equilibria;
-Coordination compounds and their stability as a function of pH. Dissolution of precipitates by complexation;
-Laboratory equipment, analytical techniques and basic operations (measures of weight and volume, solubilization and dilution, preparation of standard solutions, preparation of buffer solutions);
-Introduction to qualitative methods of drug analysis; the analytical signal; Knowledge and application of methods for the qualitative analysis of inorganic drugs included in the Italian Official Pharmacopoeia and in the European Pharmacopoeia.

Theoretical lectures supported by PowerPoint slides and practical laboratory single seat, with the same teacher.
