Prerequisites: general and inorganic chemistry
Target skills and knowledge: At the end of the class the student should be able to:
Evaluate the pH and the concentrations of substances at chemical equilibrium in water solution. In particular acids, bases, mixtures of acids and bases, polyprotic acids and amphiprotic substances.
Calculate the concentrations at equilibrium when complexation, precipitation and redox reactions take place, and also when there is competition between different equilibria.
Know how to read the distribution diagrams as a function of pH and pL.
Have some notions of the utility of these calculations in the pharmacological field.
Know the behaviour of water solutions.
Learn the gravimetric method.
Understand the titration technique, the shape of titration curves and how they can change because of the experimental conditions.
Find the end point in a titration through colorimetric indicators and with the potentiometric method.
Know the principal electrodes most commonly used: glass electrode, red-ox electrodes, ion-selective electrodes.
Learn the two categories of errors affecting experimental measurements and how to recognise them and take care of them.
Know the gaussian and Student distributions, the statistical treatment of repeated measurements using the two distributions aforementioned, the error propagation law.
Learn the use of significant digits.
Make simple statistical decisions when experimental values are compared with reference values.
Learn the least square method to evaluate the equation of a line.
Examination methods: The final exams aims at assessing the achievement of the previous stated goals by the student.
The student must enrol to the exam in UNIWEB. Registration is mandatory, if the students want to register the exam afterward. The list closes 2-3 days before the date of the exam. If the registered student cannot be present to the exam after registration, he/she should cancel the registration on UNIWEB, or send an e-mail to the teacher warning for his/her his absence.
The exam is a written test formed by multiple-choice questions and some exercises. It lasts 2 hours.
Assessment criteria: The ability of the student to solve the exercise will give to the teachers the possibility to ascertain the skills acquired by the student in the class. The multiple-choice questions, instead allow testing the overall preparation of the students.
Course unit contents: The teaching subjects are divided in three parts:
Part One
General properties of chemical equilibria and equilibrium constant. Le Chatelier Principle. Reaction in water solution: acid-base, complexation, precipitation, and red-ox. General treatment for the calculation of the concentration of different substances in solution at equilibrium taking care of competitive reactions. Reasonable approximations: how to apply and verify them. Distribution diagrams as a function of pH and pL. Pharmacological applications.
Part Two
Aims and Methods of analytical chemistry: gravimetric analysis, titrations: acid-base, complex formation, precipitation and red-pd. Titration curves. How to find the equivalent point through visual methods (colorimetric dyes) and instrumental methods (electrodes). Potentiometry. Glass electrode, ion-selective electrode, electrode of first and second kind, red-ox electrodes. First notions on instrumental analytical techniques.
Third Part
Random and systematic errors. Statistics applied to chemical analysis and definitions of: average, standard deviation, range and confidence interval, uncertainty. Significant Digits. Error propagation law. Statistical decisions. Linear regression with least square method.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures last for 8 CFU (64 hours) and they are tought in class. The teaching will concern both theoretical explanations and exercise resolution. The lectures will be resumed in powerpoint slides made available to the students by the teachers. They can be used as the basic textbook to prepare the exam.

Analytical chemistry books available in the library can be used to integrate the slides.
