Prerequisites: The knowledge and skills useful to follow the teaching are related to biochemistry, physiology and pathology.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide knowledge of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of drugs used in therapy.
Examination methods: Oral examination. Students must demonstrate knowledge of the classes of drugs treated during the course, and they should known first-line drugs and those of second-line. Further, attention will do to the counselling information about drugs, useful to the role of pharmacists.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation of the student's preparation will be based on the understanding of the pharmacological topics and the acquisition of the drugs knowledge.
Course unit contents: The course focuses on drugs used in therapy belonging to various classes, with attention to pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and side effects (Risk-Benefit ratio).

The classes of drugs listed below will be treated.

- Cardiovascular system. Therapy of heart failure, hypertension and myocardial ischemia. Anticoagulant, fibrinolytic, and antiplatelet drugs. Anti-arrhythmic drugs.
- Drug therapy for hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia.
- Pharmacotherapy of diabetes mellitus. Insulin and oral antidiabetic drugs.
- Neuropharmacology. Hypnotics and sedatives. Drug therapy of depression and anxiety disorders. Pharmacotherapy of psychosis and mania. Opioid analgesics.
- Gastrointestinal system. Treatment of gastric acidity, peptic ulcers, and gastroesophageal reflux diseases.
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
- Histamine antagonists.
- Steroidal anti-inflammatories.
- Estrogens and progestinis. Androgens.
- Respiratory system: asthma and COPD therapies.
- The vaccines.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is mainly based on lessons but will also be proposed in-depth study in the classroom using active learning.
Additional notes about suggested reading: For the study, it is suggested to use the lecture notes and an appropriate text of Pharmacotherapy.
The pdf teaching materials of lessons are available on Moodle platform.
PubMed, PubChem and Drugs Regulatory Agencies databases (FDA, EMA and AIFA) are also suggested as reference resources.
