Syllabus
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide knowledge about the evolution of architectural forms and conceptions in history, a s well as adequate command of the technical terminology and architectural vocabulary, awareness of the methodological tools necessary for a historical interpretation of architecture, from the origins to late Baroque.
Examination methods: The final exam is oral
Assessment criteria: Evaluation criteria are oriented to establish the skills learned by the student, as well as the critical reading skills of architectural works.
Course unit contents: Summary of key themes:
- The origin of architecture; Greek architecture; Roman architecture; Early Christian and Byzantine architecture. Ancient cities: principles of organization and structures.
- The Middle Ages: from the Carolingian to the Romanesque; Gothic. Medieval city: principles of organization and structures.
- The Modern Age: Architecture of Humanism and the Renaissance; the High Renaissance: the Italian Cinquecento; the Renaissance in Europe. The city of the Renaissance.
- Baroque architecture (17th and 18th centuries): in Italy; in Europe; Baroque city planning.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course consists in: classroom lectures; seminars; conferences and site visits aimed to improve, owing to the direct analysis of the works, the student's historical and critical capacities.

It is expected to be produced by the students a paper in a way that will be indicated during the course.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The course materials will be available to students via the Moodle platform.
Further bibliographical suggestions will be provided during the lectures.
