Prerequisites:
|
For a real understanding of the course topics the following courses should have been taken: Building Science, Structural Engineering, and the Workshop of Architectural Restoration. |
Target skills and knowledge:
|
The student will be able to: a) recognize the constructive techniques characterizing the existing buildings - including the monumental ones, b) evaluate the properties of materials constituting the structural components, c) approach the damage evaluation due to both static and dynamic actions, d) evaluate the structural performance of existing buildings using the most suitable methods, e) design interventions for the improvement of the structural behavior, according to the current codes and reccommendations available at Italian and international level. |
Examination methods:
|
Written assignment concerning exercises of structural assessment and design of interventions, in agreement with the current codes, and quick test on topics learned during lessons. |
Assessment criteria:
|
Abilities of critical judgment, communication and understanding of the topics taught in the classroom.
Ability to apply the acquired knowledge to existing structures in agreement with the current codes and reccommendations. |
Course unit contents:
|
Structural materials: masonry, wood, metals, historic r.c. Conditions of use and mechanical properties.
Masonry structures: construction types and static behavior of single structural elements and complex buildings.
Structural design of wooden structural elements.
Behavioural mechanisms of vaulted structures.
Behavior of load-bearing masonry structures under seismic actions.
Seismic vulnerability analyses (different levels).
Modeling methods and numerical analyses.
Safety evaluations and criteria for the selection of repair and strengthening interventions.
Design and assessment of strengthened structural components (masonry and r.c.).
Application of structural engineering methods for the valorization of archaeological sites. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods:
|
Lectures.
Prectice exercises.
Informatic labs.
Technical seminars.
Technical visits. |
