Prerequisites: no prerequisites are needed
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims at acquiring the methodological tools for a complete approach to historical buildings through the understanding of: a) their historical phases, b) the structural typology of the construction components, c) the characteristics of materials and the recognition of their deterioration processes; d) the onsite investigation procedures, e) the identification of possible intervention techniques and the control of their effectiveness in the course of time.
Examination methods: Single written examination and oral discussion by group on the application of the acquired knowledge to an existing building.
Assessment criteria: Abilities of critical judgment, communication and understanding of the topics taught in the classroom.
Ability to apply the knowledge aquired to the context of existing buildings during the laboratory experience.
Course unit contents: Historical framework and approaches to existing constructions and historical sites; General aspects of the Theory of Restoration; Protection, Conservation and Restoration; Restoration Charts, main documents and standards evolution; The restoration project; Building types, materials and structural components of historical buildings; Degradation of materials and structural damage; Diagnosis, direct and indirect methods, investigation procedures, monitoring. Materials and techniques for repair and strenghtening interventions. Case studies.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures; workshops; visits to laboratories, construction sites and companies; laboratory experience; technical seminars.
