Prerequisites: None
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide a basic knowledge of the
relations between materials microstructure and
properties, with particular reference to the materials
more frequently employed in constructions.
Examination methods: Written
Assessment criteria: The assessment will be based on the student's understanding of the arguments, on the acquisition of concepts and methodologies proposed and the ability to apply them in a conscious and autonomous.
Course unit contents: Structure of the materials: bonds, crystalline and amorphous structure, defects in the crystals.
Thermodynamics of solid state materials: phase diagrams, surface energy.
Phase transformations and diffusion. Glass transition.
Properties of materials: mechanical, thermal, corrosion, optical.
Different classes of materials and their processes.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures and application practice
Additional notes about suggested reading: Monographic papers and other didactic tools will be available on the moodle platform
