Syllabus
Prerequisites: International Law is a prerequisite for this programme.
Target skills and knowledge: This course focuses on the rules established under the World Trade Organization (WTO). It intends to offer an in-depth, practical knowledge of substantive WTO law. It will address the basic GATT/WTO principles, rules of trade in goods (technical barriers to trade, tariff and non-tariff barriers) and trade in services (GATS), as well as more specific WTO covered agreements, such as dumping, subsidies, trade related investment measures (TRIMs) and intellectual property rights (TRIPS). Trade regional exceptions (PTAs) and the emergency of mega-regional agreements will be also analysed. Additionally, the course will be focused on the unique WTO mechanism for the settlement of trade disputes and its case law. Post-Doha Round challenges for the WTO and multilateral trading system will be discussed as well.
Examination methods: There will be a final oral exam. The exam will be composed of a number of shorter questions covering the material of the entire course. Further instructions about the exam will be provided throughout the course.
Assessment criteria: Class participation: student active and high quality participation will be rewarded with a bonus on grade average.
