Syllabus
Prerequisites: You need to have passed Letteratura Inglese 1. You also need a good working knowledge of English, and a fair competence in literary terminology.
Target skills and knowledge: Learning how to analyse a text: themes, structures, poetic techniques, narrative strategies, style.
Getting to know literary periods, writers and genres of early modern English literature (sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries).
Examination methods: Oral discussion, in English.
Assessment criteria: Assessment will be based on the candidate's competence in analysing and discussing the literary texts analysed in class and inserted in the Bibliography. The student shall also be able to take into account critical interpretations of the texts and contexts on the basis of the critical literature suggested.
Course unit contents: English literary history from the early sixteenth to the first half of the seventeenth century. Analysis of the historical and social context, with a survey of the main authors and literary trends. The role of politics in literary production. Elizabethan theatre and its forms, Analysis of a choice of texts from the Henrician, Elizabethan and Jacobean periods.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures are all offered in English. Special attention will be paid to text analysis.
