Syllabus
Prerequisites: Knowledge of general chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry are required to follow the course of Cell Biology with profit.
Target skills and knowledge: After passing the final exam, the student will have acquired fundamental knowledge on various aspects of cell biology and histology of animal organisms. In particular, he will have learned about the morphology and structural organization of the cell as well as the fundamental processes that allow cells to survive and reproduce.
Examination methods: The evaluation of the student's preparation includes first of all a practical test to assess the learning during the histology laboratory. Having passed the practical test the student is admitted to the oral examination for the assessment of the learning on the subjects of the lectures.
Assessment criteria: The rating of the student as for the knowledge of Cell Biology is based primarily on its ability to present with an appropriate language and discuss topics of the lectures or the histology laboratory.
Course unit contents: Similarity and diversity of the organisms. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Model organisms of cell biology.
Chemical components of cells. The DNA double helix. DNA replication, transcription and translation.
The nucleus: the nuclear envelope, chromatin, chromosomes and their levels of organization. Cell membranes and their organization. Transport of molecules through the membranes.
The system of internal cell membranes: the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus and lysosomes. The vesicular transport. Endocytosis and exocytosis.
The cellular communication. Receptors and signal transduction pathways .
The energy metabolism. Mitochondria and ATP production .
The cytoskeleton and cell movement .
The cell cycle: phases and control system.
Cell proliferation and death.
Cell division. Mitosis and cytokinesis. Meiosis and gamete formation. Fertilization.
The animal tissues. Organization of cells into tissues. The extracellular matrix. Cell junctions. Types of tissues in aniamls: nervous, epithelial, connective, muscular. Cell renewal in the tissues.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course of Cell Biology and histology includes 56 hours of lectures and 16 hours of laboratory on light microscopy and histology.
Additional notes about suggested reading: It is provided a list of texts of Cell Biology from which the student can choose one text for self-study.
