Prerequisites: A general knowledge of sociology and anthropology would facilitate a more immediate understanding, however no specific prerequisites are set for the attendance of this course.
Target skills and knowledge: The course is meant to inform the student of the circularity of the communication and the levels in which this takes place: interpersonal, cultural and mass level. Each level is important, but the one related to interpersonal communication is the basis of any other communication. Through the examples that will be offered during the lessons, students will realize the complexity of communication as well that you can not take for granted the "understanding" that must always be sought. Through the use of the Forum we aim to will be amplify some peculiarities of the various levels of communication. The Forum will also serve as a point of discussion with the teacher, but also among the classroom.
Examination methods: The examination will consist of a written test with a total of three questions on the two mandatory textbooks and a question on a book of your choice. The questions are open and we econurage you to use as much space as you need to answer the questions.
Assessment criteria: Each question will be open and the mark will consider the argument that the student will use to contextualize the question. With this method we intended to "monitor" the understanding and the inclusion of a subject within the course topics. Each question will have a single vote and the vote resulting from the average will be the final one.
Course unit contents: The course content will cover the deepening of interpersonal communication verbal and nonverbal, cultural communication and documented (written and video) communication, the new technologies of communication and “classic” mass communication. There will be a specific focus on Social Networks and the recent challenges arising in respect of them.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: An activity that we have been following for several years and that we find very useful is the use of a Forum in which the teacher posts on a weekly basis (starting from the third week of classes) that will be the stimulus for discussion both towards the teacher and the class. The posts are relevant to course subjects and are also meant to enhance awareness and knowledge on relevant subject areas. Posts can be also small texts of other scholars of Sociology of Communication.
Additional notes about suggested reading: First Book: The Communications System must to be studied from p. 111 to p. 238 (parts to be studied are included in PDF in the lessons); the whole second book must to be studied. The first two books are mandatory. Among the list of books, the student must pick just an additional one, of choice.
