Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of molecular biology is required.
Target skills and knowledge: 1) Provide the principles and basic knowledge for understanding the mechanisms of transmission of hereditary characteristics.
2) Understand the basics of human genetic diseases with particular reference to behavioral and neurological disorders.
Examination methods: Written: open questions, questions with multiple choice, exercises.
Assessment criteria: The result will be evaluated based on the answers that will bring out the understanding and learning of the topics covered, the use of appropriate scientific terms and the ability to link different concepts.
Course unit contents: The information of life: DNA contains the genetic information; replication and transcription of DNA; RNA and protein synthesis; the genetic code.
Cellular organization of genetic information: genes and genomes.
Mendel's laws; autosomal and sex-linked traits; complex or multifactorial characters.
The molecular basis of genetic variability: meiotic recombination and crossing-over; mutations.
Using family trees as tools to determine the mode of transmission of monogenic (autosomal and X-linked) and the definition of probability.
Examples of mutant alleles responsible for hereditary diseases and molecular research tools.
Relationships between genetics and environment in determining behavior; Genetic analysis of normal and pathological behavior in humans.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures, exercises in the classroom, journal-club
