Syllabus
Prerequisites: The student has to own the knowledge about mathematics and chemistry. In particular the student should be able to solve exercises related to: calculation of derivatives and integrals, study of systems of linear equations.
Target skills and knowledge: To understand the fundamental concepts of mass conservation balances, to be able to translate physical phenomena into mathematical terms and to appreciate the reasons for having to resort to semi-empiricism in order to quantify complex problems in mass transfer.
Examination methods: Written exam compulsory (2½ hours duration, two or three exercises)
Optional oral exam for students whose mark in the written exam taken is greater than or equal to 25/30.
Assessment criteria: The student must demonstrate to know the topics covered in the course, to be able to explain them and demonstrate reasoning skills on them.
From a practical point of view the student must be able to analyze and solve practical examples with the methods set out during the course, demonstrating reasoning skills in dealing exercises also different from those proposed.
Course unit contents: Transport processes: the similarities among momentum, heat and mass transfer. Mass transfer at the macroscpic level : macroscopic balances for isothermal batch, semi-batch and flow systems; recycle. Mass transfer at the microscopic level : diffusivity and the mechanisms of mass transport; equations of change for multicomponent systems; dispersion. Elementary topics in chemical reactor design: reaction rate,order of reaction, the continuity equation for ideal reactors (batch, CSTR, PFR); the continuity equation for non-ideal reactors (dispersed model). Interphase transport in mixtures: phase equilibria, transfer coefficients, separation processes (absorption, adsorption).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Learning activities consist of frontal lectures, both for the theoretical part and for the application of the theory to practical cases and exercises .
The main tools used by the teacher will be: projection of digital notes (power point), available on the web and blackboard.
