Syllabus
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims at introducing students to the basic concepts and methods of probability and statistics for studying random phenomena. At the end of the course students will have sufficient skills to describe and interpret the basic information contained in a data set. Then, using the basic tools of statistical inference, they will be able to estimate and test hypotheses about the unknown parameters of the population.
Examination methods: Written examination: exercises, multiple choice and open response questions.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation of the preparation of the student will be based on the understanding of the handled topics, the acquisition of concepts and skills to apply them.
Course unit contents: 1) Descriptive Statistics: data matrix (statistical units-variables). Measurement scales of statistical variables. Data summary and display: frequency distribution (absolute and relative); cumulative frequency distribution; percentiles; measures of location and variability.
2) Elements of probability: definitions and basic concepts (random experiment, sample space and events. Axioms of probability). Random variables. Cumulative distribution function, probability density function. Expected values. Independent random variables. Poisson, exponential and normal random variables. Other random variables: Chi square, t and F, Lognormal, Gamma, Gumbel. Central limit theorem.
3) Statistical Inference: Sampling statististics. Distributions of sampling statistics: the sample mean, the sample variance, the sample binomial proportion. Hypothesis testing: general procedure for testing; significante levels and p-values. Confidence Intervals on the mean (known and unknown variance) and variance of a normal distribution.
4) Introduction to regression modeling.
