Syllabus
Prerequisites: Numerical Analysis
Target skills and knowledge: The aim is at providing Civil Engineering students with the basis for the formulation, development and implementation of numerical models for the solution of boundary and initial boundary value problems governed by 2nd order PDEs. A particular care will be paid to the Finite Element Method (FEM) and its application to the typical civil engineering problems, e.g., equilibrium, advection and diffusion.
Examination methods: Computer implementation of a numerical project. Oral exam.
Assessment criteria: Correctness and quality of the numerical project. Knowledge and understanding of the class topics.
Course unit contents: Basic concepts for the implementation of numerical models. Solution of sparse large-size linear system and computation of the eigenvalue/eigenvector pairs: projective methods. Solution of ordinary differential equations: finite difference methods, stability and convergence. Solution of 2nd order partial differential equations (PDE): classification, variational methods, finite elements, transient problems. Numerical solution of the diffusion, heat diffusion, advective transport and elastic equilibrium PDEs. Numerical project for the computation of the Finite Element solution of the elastic equilibrium of an elastic membrane with the fundamental vibration frequency.
