Prerequisites: The course in English Language, Linguistics and Translation requires a CEFR C1 level in the five skills - reading, writing, listening, speaking and translation - as learning outcome at the end of undergraduate degree courses in languages. It presupposes good knowledge of English phonetics and phonology, morphosyntax, semantics both at a theoretical and an applied level.
Target skills and knowledge: At the end of the first year in the degree course, students should be approaching C2 level of the CEFR in the a.m. five skills as a necessary condition to be met before learning the linguistics of English special languages and its application in communication and mediation - technical writing, LSP translation, liaison/community interpreting - as well as in the use of suitable registers in different situational contexts.
Examination methods: 1) TECHNICAL WRITING, REVISION AND LSP TRANSLATION: the global simulation with the student at the centre of learning and as the person in charge of her/his own performance includes series of tasks with activities that are constantly monitored by the course teacher, tested through the final production of a translation of technical-scientific and/or economic-legal text and finally summarised in a portfolio including terminological and phrseological entries.
2) LIAISON/COMMUNITY INTERPRETING: continuous, formative assessment of tasks and final summative assessment.
3) L2 TRANSLATION AND SPEAKING: practical activities in both semesters lead to a written and oral assessment.
4) TAL C1 test (reading, listening and writing).
Non-attending students' learning will be assessed as follows: a) a written LSP translation test with extended commentary on LSP issues and translation problems; b) an oral test on the linguistics of special languages and the theory of LSP translation and liaison/community interpreting and c) an assessment of L2 translation and speaking skills; d) TAL C1 test (reading, listening and writing).
Assessment criteria: Students' evaluation will be based on their grasp of syllabus topics, acquisition of fundamentals in the analysis, reviewing, revising, and translating of technical, scientific, economic and legal documentation as well as of relating methods and strategies and on their independence and awareness in language use and mediation.
Course unit contents: 1) ANALYSIS, TECHNICAL WRITING, TEXT REVISION AND LSP TRANSLATION: simulation of work in at a language service provider with workstation to meet language and translation requirements of all stages of activity in a company, including analysis, writing, review and revision, translation of technical, scientific, economic and legal texts. Task conditions simulate work in a professional context with texts of increasing difficulty, search, creation, and management of terminology, phraseology, general and ad hoc corpora, translation memories, discussion forums and miscellanoeus resources.
2) LIAISON/COMMUNITY INTERPRETING: development of memory skills and strategies for interpreting activities concerning the topics outlined in point 1 above.
3) L2 TRANSLATION AND SPEAKING: development of L2 production skills with special reference to cohesion and argumentation in writing and speaking.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Global simulation of professional activities at a language service provider with creation of a computer-aided workstation for writing, review and revision, translation and liaison/community interpreting of technical, scientific, economic and legal documentation. This involves learning the theoretical foundations and acquiring the practical skills to search for, create and manage LSP corpora, terminology and phraseology, translation memories, multimedia and multimodal software for languages, language service provider management software.
