Syllabus
Prerequisites: Bachelor's degree in Literature or History.
Target skills and knowledge: It is the aim of the course to offer the preliminary linguistic and historical knowledge and the necessary methodological tools for the critical study of ancient Christian literature.
Examination methods: Final oral exam.
Assessment criteria: Grading will take into consideration the knowledge of the subject, the clarity of the exposition, the cleverness at arguing.
Course unit contents: The last clash between Hellenism and Christianity. The main theme of the course is the reaction of the Greek Christian writers to the political and religious program of Julian the Apostate in the second half of the fourth century CE. In particular, the study of this complex topic will focus on the fourth oration by Gregory of Nazianzus.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Seminar teaching based on the reading of Gregory of Nazianzus, Fourth Oration against Julian.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Notes from the lessons. Photocopies of select pages of the Greek text. Further bibliographical information will be given during the course.
