Syllabus
Prerequisites: Foundations of Computer Science, Probability and Statistics.
Target skills and knowledge: This course covers Information Retrieval (IR) and methods and models for designing Search Engines as well as advanced or more recent topics such as Machine Learning and its application to IR. The lectures, homeworks, and laboratory assignments will in part be motivated by and organized around the design and implementation of a basic search algorithms useful in a real-world applications.
Examination methods: Oral discussion and presentation of student group projects.
Assessment criteria: Project reports might be considered other than the usual knowledge of the topics of the course.
Course unit contents: Core topics include material necessary to understand how an IR system is constructed and functions. The following core topics will be covered:
Indexing and retrieval methods
Retrieval models
Web search engines
Machine learning and application to IR
Evaluation
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures and laboratory activities.
