Syllabus
Prerequisites: None.
Target skills and knowledge: The class provides essential notions about risk perception and communication and about decisional processes. At the end of the class, students should have understood and master the topics covered during the class. They should be able to critically analyze communications concerning risk and decision making and to apply methods to improve them.
Examination methods: Written exam.
Multiple choice questions and open-ended questions.
Note: Students must sign-up for the written exam and for the grade registration throughout UniWeb.
Delegating the registration of the grade is allowed, with appropriate paperwork (delegation form and copy of ID).
Assessment criteria: Students will be evaluated on the basis of the knowledge acquired and meeting the class objective. A combination of multiple choice questions and open-ended questions will ascertain both quantity and quality of students’ skills and knowledge, in relation to the textbooks.
Course unit contents: The syllabus for this class is the following:
1) Introduction to the concepts of risk and decision.
2) Statistics and risk perception.
3) Communicating risk: methods, difficulties, and solutions.
4) Normative and descriptive theories of decision making.
5) Heuristics and systematic errors in judgments
6) Prospect Theory and framing effect
7) Emotions and decision making.
8) “Nudge”: libertarian paternalism and choice architecture.
9) Examples and applications.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures, with slideshow presentation. Depending on the class size, students may be offered the opportunity to do individual or group presentations or reports.
The class may include lectures on specific topics and/or taught by experts, as communicated to students during lectures.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The textbook "Nudge" by Thaler and Sunstein is available in English and the scientific article by Gigerenzer at al. is in English.
