Syllabus
Prerequisites: Good knowledge of human brain anatomy and nervous system are required.
Target skills and knowledge: Students are supposed to develop the following skills:

- knowledge of principles and applications of the research techniques;
- critical evaluation of the advantages/disadvantages of each technique;
- ability to develop ideas for possible experimental applications of the proposed techniques, to be discussed in small groups;
- adequate use of specific terminology.
Examination methods: The final examination is made up of multiple choice questions. For 5 questions the student will be also asked to write a short motivation for the given answer.
Assessment criteria: Students' assessment will focus on:
- adequate knowledge of topics and techniques (principles and
applications)
- adequate use of terminology
- confidence with "key" concepts
Course unit contents: Magnetic resonance imagin techniques
- functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)
- diffusion and tractography techniques (DTI, DSI, DWI)
- computational neuroanatomy (VBM, TBM, DBM)

Spectroscopy techniques
- near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)

Nuclear medicine techniques
- positron emission tomography (PET)
- single photon emission tomography (SPECT)

Elettroencephalography techniques
-Event-related potentials (ERPs)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Oral lectures. Classes will cover all the topics in their general aspects. Students are expected to further explore the themes by using the textbook and the supporting material provided by the teacher (articles in English language).
Data analysis simulation will be available, according to students numerosity and pc classrooms availability.
Students will be given the opportunity to attend (in small groups) to sessions of magnetic resonance data acquisition.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Supplementary material (articles and parts of other manuals, in english language) will be provided by the professor during the course.
Textbooks (and optional supplementary readings)
