Syllabus
Prerequisites: Knowledge of the main sociological theories (Suggested: Darren O'Byrne, Sociologia. Fondamenti e teorie. Pearson Italia, Milano-Torino)
Target skills and knowledge: Acquisition of the main theories developed by the sociology of deviance and critical criminology;
Acquisition of the main empirical research methodologies applicable to the study of the sociology of deviance;
Ability to apply the theories and using research methodologies in relation to actual cases.
Examination methods: The final examination will be oral and consists of a discussion on the covered topics. Intermediate evaluation tests and seminars may be proposed only for attending students.
Assessment criteria: Evaluation will be based on knowledge of texts and individual development of covered topics.
Course unit contents: The course aims to analyze the main theoretical contributions of the sociology of deviance and critical criminology (anomie theory, differential association, labeling, ecological and integrated approaches). Particular attention will be paid to the study of the relationship between sociology of deviance and critical approaches in criminology, as well as to the deepening of the different methods of empirical research.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures, visuals and videos, class discussions, reports of external guests, seminars.
