Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basics of General Psychology.
Target skills and knowledge: On completion of this course, students should be able to understand both basic theories, research findings and methods in Social Psychology.
In more details they should be able to:
- understand basic issues of theory;
- outline some classic and recent studies in social psychology and discuss key theoretical concepts;
- understand the main research findings from the established social psychological literature;
- understand the research methodology adopted in the social psychological literature.
Examination methods: Written exam (only), made up of multiple-choice and/or open-ended questions.
The MOODLE platform would also be a viable option in order to collect assessment's information.
Assessment criteria: Students' assessment will be based on his/her mastery of key information, topics, concepts, methodology and technical language of the sociopsychological literature, and on his/her ability to analyse specific cases.
Course unit contents: The course aims to provide an overview of major basic theories, concepts and questions in the field of Social Psychology. In particular, the course goals are as follows:
1. to provide a basic understanding of how social psychologists think about and study human behavior;
2. to provide the tools useful to understand and critically examine psychological research;
3. to provide an introduction to -and a general survey of- several theories and principles that underlie social psychology;
4. to encourage reflection about the application of social psychological research to real-world and everyday life issues.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is based on lectures, group and case-based discussions, and involvement in ongoing empirical studies (both correlational and experimental).
Active participation is encouraged for all students attending the course.
