Common characteristics of the Integrated Course unit
Prerequisites:
|
Basic knowledge of laboratory medicine, genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, basic oncology, physiopathology and clinical methodology is essential. |
Target skills and knowledge:
|
In terms of hematological and oncological diseases, immune system diseases and rheumatic diseases (locomotion system and connective tissues), at the end of the course the student must demonstrate:
• a suitable knowledge of nosographical, etiopathogenetic, physiopathological, anathomopathological and clinical profiles;
• a suitable ability to recognize, critically interpret and correlate the principal symptoms and physical signals as well as to request and understand the essential laboratory and instrumental procedures;
• a suitable ability to identify conditions requiring the contribution of the specialist in the field. |
Examination methods:
|
The evaluation will be made with an oral examination and will be divided in two parts:
Part 1 will deal with Hematology and Medical Oncology disciplines.
Part 2 will concern Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology fields.
Students must register in the lists that will be prepared independently for the two parts.
The result of the examination of each part will be registered by secretariat services and the final score will result from the average of the scores achieved in the two parts. |
Assessment criteria:
|
The ability of the student will be evaluated in terms of knowledge, his/her manner to present and discuss the matter. |

Course unit contents:
|
1)DEFINITION, CLASSIFICATION, EPIDEMIOLOGY, PREVENTION AND SOCIOECONOMIC IMPACT. INTERPRETATION OF CLINICAL TRIALS.
2)APPROACH TO THE PATIENT. Clinical evaluation: signs and general and local symptoms (medical history and physical examination); performance status / quality of life.
3)LABORATORY ORGANIZATION. Laboratory evaluation: non specific indexes; organ functionality parameters; hematological analysis; clinical-laboratory correlations.
4)PATHOLOGY AND CLINIC. Etiology, pathogenetic mechanisms and grounds of pathological and clinical features.
5)DIAGNOSTIC PATHWAY
6)PRINCIPLES OF PHARMACOLOGY AND THERAPY of the following diseases:
•Cancer of the lung
•Cancer of the breast
•Cancer of the colon-rectum
•Cancer of the prostate
•Cancer of the Ovary
•Germinal tumors
•Melanoma
•Cancer of the pancreas
•Genitourinary tract neoplasms
The management of the single diseases shall be preceded by a introductory general section that will focus on concepts of general physiopathology and pathological anatomy, of classification issues, of differential diagnosis or therapy basics, peculiar to the specific disciplines:
•epidemiology of tumors, risk factors;
•primary and secondary prevention in oncology;
•tumor markers;
•paraneoplastic syndromes and oncology emergencies;
•prognostic evaluation criteria of tumors (Staging, Grading, immunohistochemical markers and new technologies);
•TNM system;
•base concepts of the use of anti-tumor chemotherapeutics, of hormone therapy, of targeted molecular therapies, of radiotherapy, of radiometabolic therapy and their side effects;
•integrated therapies: adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapies, chemo-radiation treatments;
•pain management, general principles and specific cases of rehabilitation in oncology, issues in end of life care, psychological support for the patient and caregivers. |
