Prerequisites: For a complete understanding of the topics covered, acquired knowledge of: biology, anatomy, physiology, pathology and general profhylaxis of infectious deaseses is required. It is also necessary that the student has knowledge of physics, chemistry, microbiology and basic statistics.
Target skills and knowledge: - Tools for studying diseases at population level;
- Epidemiology and main methodologies for epidemiological studies;
- Healthcare system in Italy: organization, management, rules, problems;
- Identification and analysis of factors influencing health. Strategies to promote and preserve health;
- Principles and problems about prevention of communicable and non communicable diseases.
Examination methods: The assessment of profit takes place at the end of the course through a written test with multiple choice quizzes): 60 questions with one and only one correct answer.
Assessment criteria: The score is based on the score achieved in the written test: the correct answer is worth 1 point, the wrong answer takes away 0.25, the answer not given is worth 0 points.
Course unit contents: Hygiene: definition, objectives and purposes.
Relations between man and the environment in the onset of diseases. Disease health concept. Causes, causative factors and disease risk factors. Natural history of the disease. Prevention. Levels of disease prevention and health promotion. Health education: objectives and methods. Epidemiology: definition and purpose.
Basic operations and epidemiological method.
Indicators of the health status of a population: a positive trend, a negative trend. Epidemiological indicators: rates and ratios, prevalence, incidence. Epidemiological studies: descriptive, observational, experimental. International and National Health Organization. General epidemiology of infectious diseases. Infection and disease. Natural history of infectious diseases. Etiology, causal factors and risk factors.
Epidemiology and specific prophylaxis of infectious diseases.
Poliomyelitis, measles, rubella, mumps, viral hepatitis A, B, C and delta, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, influenza, cerebrospinal meningitis, abdominal typhus and other salmonellosis, diphtheria, tetanus, brucellosis, tuberculosis, toxoplasmosis, food toxin infections.
Epidemiology and prevention of some non-infectious diseases of social interest.
Cardiovascular diseases, tumors, diabetes, chronic bronchopneumopathy.
Hygiene of the environment.
Drinking water: water requirements, water supply, potability and control criteria. Drinking water. Legislation. Air pollution: contaminants and causes. Health effects. Legislation.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The teaching includes frontal lessons.
