Syllabus
Prerequisites: The teaching treat multidisciplinary topics. Basic information in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, food chemistry, analytical chemistry and microbiology are needed. Basic topic are needed in order to understand the different parts related to medicinal chemistry analytical chemistry that are treated in relation to food supplements
Target skills and knowledge: Students will obtain information about the rational project of food supplements. Mechanism of action of the most important active compounds will be studied and the main activities and effects will be studied considering the quali quantitative composition and the literature data. Thecniques related to production and quality control of products will be part of the teaching. Analytical issues to estabilish safety and quality of products will be considered. The information about legislation and rules about these products will be part of the teaching. Information to students will allow them to critically evaluate products from a chemico-pharmaceutical point of view as well as for their active constituents and quality. The acquired knowledge will be useful for the pharmacist in order to better explain the correct use of food supplements to consumers
Examination methods: The student will demonstrate to have acquired the information and the knowledge related to the formulation of products and the rational choice of starting materials. At the same time student will need to demonstrated to have acquired the information about normative part and related to the analytical issues of these products. THe overall informations will help the pharmacist in the product choice and selling. The oral examination is needed to verify the student preparation as well as the ability of student to be critical on the information about the products.
Assessment criteria: The knowledge about the chemistry of the products for health, critical ability to evaluate formulation that are present on the market will be evaluated.
Course unit contents: The course is related to the food supplements, herbal products etc that are present in pharmacy.
L’obiettivo è fornire al farmacista le conoscenze degli aspetti chimico-farmaceutici, ed analitici inerenti la realizzazione, il controllo di qualità, gli aspetti di sicurezza d’uso di integratori alimentari e prodotti correlati. The goal is to give to pharmacist the information related to the chemical pharmaceutical, analytical, formulation, quality control and safety of use of food supplements and related products.
Il corso sarà articolato in tre differenti sezioni come segue:
1) Aspetti chimico farmaceutici relativi alla realizzazione di un integratore alimentare/prodotto della salute
-chimica farmaceutica delle sostanze ed ingredienti utilizzati nei prodotti per la salute ed il
Benessere.
The teaching will be divided in section
1) Chemical and pharmaceutical/medicinal chemistry: due to product formulation and due to the medicinal chemistry of the active compound in the supplements. Extractin purification of constituents.
2) Analytical part related to the safety and quality control of the products. Quantitative analysis on active constituents, analysis of contaminants. Stability of active constituents and implication on shelf life and conservation issues.
3) Examples of products that are present in pharmacy. Fish oils, vegetal oils, plant containing products, microorganism as probiotics, prebiotics.
-Critical reading of labels; comparison of different products.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal teaching. Powerpoint presentation of groups of students on specific arguments.
