Target skills and knowledge: The educational goal of General pathology is to provide the graduate, who shall held their profession in connection with the distribution of medication, prevention and health education, knowledge essential for the understanding of the causes and pathogenetic mechanisms that underlie diseases. The educational objective of Pathophysiology is to integrate the elements characterizing the pathology with the fundamentals of general pathophysiology.
Examination methods: Ex cathedra lectures. Thematic insights.
Assessment criteria: Hand-written examination made up of three general questions (open questions).
Course unit contents: Etiology and pathogenesis. Causes of diseases; elementary and complex mechanisms of disease. From normal to pathological.
General pathophysiology. From physiology to decompensation. Compensatory mechanisms and failure.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: General etiology. Definition of disease. Etiology and pathogenesis of pathological phenomena. Internal and external factors of the disease. Etiological multiplicity. (a) Pathogenic intrinsic factors. Mutagens and genetic mutations: molecular mechanisms and modalities, phenotypic expression of mutations. Hereditary transmission mode. Hereditary diseases and genetic disorders: informational errors, alterations of the expression of genetic information and of post-translational epigenesis. Diseases caused by chromosomal abnormalities. (b) Pathogenic extrinsic factors. Adverse drug reactions.

Cellular Pathology. Reversible and irreversible alterations of cellular structure and function. Adaptive responses of cells and intercellular environment. Cell death: necrosis and apoptosis. Changes in growth and differentiation: atrophy, hypertrophy, hyperplasia, metaplasia. Regeneration and repair.

Inflammation. Definition and cardinal signs. Acute inflammation. Cells and chemical mediators of acute inflammation. Chemotaxis and phagocytosis. Macrophages. Cytokines. Complement. Chronic inflammation. Foreign body granulomas and infectious granulomas. General effects of local lesion and inflammation.

Immunology and immunopathology. The immune system. Lymphocyte populations. Characteristics of the immune response: specificity and memory. Immunological tolerance. Antigens and antibodies. Major histocompatibility antigens and rejection of transplants. Immune deficiencies. Immunosuppression. Immediate-type and retarded hypersensitivity. Pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases.

Oncology. Nature of the tumors. Types of cancers. Properties of cancer cells. Etiology of cancer: chemical, physical and viral causes. Informational errors and carcinogenesis. Pathogenesis of neoplastic transformation. Oncogenes and anti-oncogenes. Tumor angiogenesis. Local invasiveness and metastasis.

Infectious diseases. Interactions between infecting agent and host: host defenses against infections, mechanisms of action of pathogenic microorganisms. Examples of pathogenesis of microbial and viral diseases.

Pathophysiology. Criteria and classification methods. Cardiac pathophysiology. Heart failure. Circulatory pathophysiology. Edema. Ischemia, infarction. Shock. Arteriosclerosis, atherosclerosis. Pathophysiology of blood. Anemias. Pathophysiology of hemostasis. Bleeding. Thrombosis. Respiratory physiopathology. Anoxia and hypercapnia. Renal pathophysiology. Acute and chronic failure. Liver pathophysiology. Insufficiency, jaundice and hyperbilirubinemias.

Pathophysiology of metabolism. Diabetes. Pathology of lipoproteins and hypercholesterolemia. Examples of inborn errors of metabolism and gene therapy. Pathophysiology of the endocrine system. Hormone resistance syndromes. Pathophysiology of thermoregulation: hyperthermia and fever. Pathophysiology of skeletal muscle. Muscular Dystrophies. Malignant Hyperthermia. Examples of disorders of ion channels.
