Target skills and knowledge: The aim of the course is to provide students with the basic concepts of Physics. At the end of the course the student should be able to apply their knowledge to the study of Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry and Life Sciences, with particular reference to Physiology. To do this, applications of physical concepts to the Biomedical Sciences are highlighted.
Examination methods: Lectures and discussion of exercises, applications, and questions in the classroom.
Assessment criteria: Written test with multiple choice questions and final oral examination.
Course unit contents: Mechanical elements of the point and systems of material points. Fluid Mechanics. First and Second Law of Thermodynamics. Electrostatics and magnetostatics. Elements of electrodynamics. Wave phenomena, physical optics. Geometrical optics.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Physics and the scientific method. Physical quantities and units of measurement (SI and CGS systems). Dimensional analysis, the principle of homogeneity. Direct and indirect measurements. Measurement errors, significant digits and order of magnitude. Kinematics: average and instantaneous speed and acceleration. Uniformly accelerated motion and uniform circular motion. Dynamics: the three principles of dynamics. Examples of forces. Work. Work of the force-weight, the elastic force, the gravitational force, the electric force. Kinetic energy theorem. Power. Conservative and dissipative forces. Potential energy of the weight-force, the spring force, the gravitational force and the electric force. Conservation of energy. Harmonic oscillator. Outline of mechanical systems. Fluid Mechanics: ideal fluids. Pressure: Stevin, Pascal and Archimedes principles. Barometer. Stationary motion in fluids. Continuity equation: the flow rate. Bernoulli's theorem. Real fluids: viscosity. Poiseuille and Stokes laws. Propagation of waves: longitudinal and transverse waves. Fronts and rays. Speed ​​of propagation. Sinusoidal waves: superposition principle. Outline of interference phenomena. Thermodynamics: Temperature, centigrade and absolute scale. Heat. Transport mechanisms of heat. Equivalence work-heat. First principle: the internal energy.
